Why you get withdrawals

I have a cup of coffee almost every day, and that’s the way I like it.

I’m addicted to caffeine, but not in the physical sense. It’s only a psychological addiction of mine at this point.

I used to get withdrawals when I’d cut the caffeine. Pounding headaches, sluggishness, low motivation… And too much caffeine in one go would give me adrenal fatigue, killing my performance in the gym…

Now when I go a while without caffeinating myself, I don’t feel a thing. I’m my normal self. I can work, train, be productive with no withdrawal symptoms at all.

I can quit caffeine anytime I want to, and stick to it, but

I don’t want to.

There’s not much of a difference between me on coffee, and me off coffee now. I honestly just drink it because I’m addicted to the ritual of going out to a cafe to get work done. Working from home ain’t really my vibe, and I like to people watch + chat up cute girls at the cafes 😉

So how’d I stop myself being physically dependent on caffeine?

Nutrient repletion

This is the most vital part of quitting a physical addiction/dependency.

Withdrawals hurt because your biochemistry’s slowly realigning itself after being bent out of shape, so when you experience them, you have one of two choices:

1. Consume the substance again, bend your biochemistry to its will again. Numb your withdrawal symptoms instead of treating them.

2. Realign your biochemistry QUICKLY.

The reason withdrawals get slowly better over time is because you’re slowly repleting your body with the the fuel it needs to get itself living comfortably without that substance.

Most people assume TIME is the most important variable in waiting for withdrawals to fade, and yes, it plays a part. But not nearly as effective a part as doing more quickly what happens over that time – NUTRIENT REPLETION.

Electrolytes, vitamins, macronutrients, water. Be aware of what your substance addiction/use has depleted from your body.

That’s why hangovers happen, for example. Most of a hangover is simply dehydration and electrolyte depletion. Knowing this, you can avoid hangovers like I do, even after heavy drinking sessions. Instead of being motionless and out of service in bed all day after partying, listening to entire Royal Blood albums in one go because you’re too weak to get up and change the music blasting from your phone, only getting on your feet to puke in the toilette – like I’ve been when I didn’t understand biochemistry and my own was spiraling downward.

Psychological withdrawal operates similarly.

What emotional needs of yours is your addiction meeting or attempting to meet?

Let’s use my caffeine addiction as an example. I don’t need this shit to get work done. I don’t need this shit to feel like myself (unlike weightlifting. Nothing makes me feel more like myself than throwing around heavy weights does). I just like bitter drinks and not working at home. My caffeine addiction is meeting my emotional need for STIMULATION. Working in a crowd of chatty cafe-goers instead of the dead, lonely silence of my bedroom. The possibility of seeing a pretty lady worth chatting up. You know I love cafe game.

Your physical needs are nuanced, and something better gone over in coaching. Emotional/psychological/spiritual needs, we’ll go over those in coaching too. But for now, I want you to ask yourself something:

What needs of yours are your addictions/habits REALLY trying to meet?

Are you addicted to alcohol, or to the ritual of going out, seeing people, and letting loose?

Are you addicted to nicotine, or to mental stimulation?

Are you addicted to porn, or are you just lonely and craving intimacy?
